The 1933 Double Eagle was the last gold coin struck for circulation by the U.S. Before they were legally released, however, a Presidential order was issued on March 6, 1933 prohibiting banks from paying out gold coins or gold certificates. The 1933 double eagle coin was never officially released into circulation and still considered the pinnacle of gold coins by most avid collectors. Over the years, the coin and its complex lore have been written about extensively, as the main focus of a number of books, magazine and newspaper articles. The 1933 double eagle is a United States 20-dollar gold coin. Although 445,500 specimens of this Saint-Gaudens double eagle were minted in 1933, none were ever officially circulated, and all but two were ordered to be melted down.
